What is 21st Century Learning
Twenty-first-century learning is related to the use of technology in schools, as the world is continually beginning to change into a more technologically, interconnected environment. The relationship to information nowadays is different to that in the past. In the twenty-first-century, there are many critical attributes in which education is formulated around.
These include:
· Technologies and Multimedia
· Student – centered
· Project based and research driven
· Adapting to and creating
· Constant personal and social
· Change and lifelong learning
· Relevant, Rigorous and real world
· 21st Century skills
· Global classrooms globalisation
· Integrated and interdisciplinary
Additionally twenty-first-century learning is believed to address the ‘whole person,’ rather than aiming for the success of a job that already exists, it is gaining the skills and knowledge for jobs that haven't even been invented yet. Twenty-first-century learners wont be able to learn in the “industrial sector, as a new century calls for a new paradigm.” (powerontexas, 2011)
Twenty-first-century learning is a personal, self-directed, technologically engaged type of learning. Teachers focus on the student learning in different inquiry-based environments in order to further their knowledge and skill set. In this atmosphere and less structured way of learning project based learning is evident in order to collaborate with one another, be creative and driven through research so that the students can adapt to working in teams, manage time, and additionally present to a mixed audience. The different learning styles consistent with twenty-first-century education allows the students to grow in their skills which will then be valuable for the workplace in the future. "The twenty-first-century provides enourmous challenges for educators, but also boundless opportunities." (powerontexas, 2011) It provides the "ability to inspire and to address the new paradigm for a new age."(powerontexas, 2011)
